Sciatica Treatment in Debary

The spine is a made up of 33 bones stacked on top of each other separated by soft ligamentous discs, which protect the spinal cord from injury or trauma. The bones and discs of the spine allow a person to stay upright, bend, and twist. They are held in place by a network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The nerves extend from the spine to other areas of the body, such as the arms and legs.

Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the low back or buttock and travels into one or both legs. Sciatic nerve pain varies in intensity and frequency. Sciatic pain can be described as dull, achy, sharp, pins and needles or like an electric shock shooting leg pain. Other sciatica symptoms may include burning, numbness, and tingling sensations. Sciatica is also called radiating or referred pain, neuropathy, or neuralgia. Sciatica is a symptom of a condition rather than a diagnosis in itself, the proper diagnosis for this term is lumbar radiculopathy.

Causes of Sciatic Pain

“Sciatica” or radiculopathy is generally caused by sciatic nerve compression. Spinal disorders are known to cause sciatic nerve pain include lumbar joint restrictions and degeneration, herniated or bulging discs, tight muscles such as the piriformis muscle, pregnancy and childbirth, spinal tumors, and non-spinal disorders such as diabetes, constipation, or sitting on your wallet in your back pocket.

Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disc, bone spur, or narrowing of the spine such as spinal stenosis compresses part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.

Although the pain associated with sciatica can be severe, most cases resolve with conservative non-operative treatments like the treatments offered in our office. People who have severe sciatica that's associated with significant leg weakness or bowel or bladder changes might be candidates for surgery and will be referred out to a specialist if any red flags are found during the exam at our office.
